IVF explained: what to expect from your first consultation

A calm guide to the medical, emotional and practical steps that begin a fertility journey.

Starting an IVF journey can feel overwhelming. There is a great deal of information to absorb, and it can be difficult to know what to expect from the very first steps. One of the most important things to understand is that your first consultation is not a commitment to treatment — it is an opportunity to ask questions, share your history, and begin to understand what a personalised path through fertility care might look like for you.

A clearer path through treatment

Every fertility journey is individual. A thoughtful care team combines clinical expertise with careful listening, helping patients understand their choices while keeping safety, wellbeing and personal goals at the centre of the plan.

Your first consultation will typically begin with a review of your medical history. Your doctor will ask about your reproductive history, any previous fertility treatments, your general health, and any medications you are currently taking.

At this stage, your doctor may also request or review initial diagnostic tests. For women, this commonly includes a blood test to assess ovarian reserve and a transvaginal ultrasound. For men, a semen analysis is usually requested if one has not been performed recently.

With the right information and support, families can move forward at their own pace and make decisions that feel informed, respectful and right for them.
