Fresh or frozen embryo transfer: what is the difference?

The main differences between fresh and frozen transfers and why timing may vary between families.

One of the decisions that arises during an IVF cycle is whether to proceed with a fresh embryo transfer — transferring an embryo in the same cycle in which eggs were collected — or to freeze all embryos for transfer in a subsequent cycle. Both approaches have their place, and the right choice depends on a number of individual factors.

A clearer path through treatment

Every fertility journey is individual. A thoughtful care team combines clinical expertise with careful listening, helping patients understand their choices while keeping safety, wellbeing and personal goals at the centre of the plan.

A frozen embryo transfer allows time for the uterine lining to recover after stimulation, may be preferred when there are concerns about ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and gives additional time for preimplantation genetic testing if that has been recommended. A fresh transfer may be appropriate when conditions are favourable and the clinical team is satisfied that the endometrium is ready.

With the right information and support, families can move forward at their own pace and make decisions that feel informed, respectful and right for them.
